Portugal recently approved a new visa modality that many have been waiting for: the visa for remote work providers!


Now, those who work remotely for companies outside Portugal will be able to apply for a residence visa to legally live in Portugal and work for anywhere employer.


What's the benefits of the Digital Nomad visa?


Rights

The right to live, work and/or study in Portugal. Portuguese residency rights, including education and healthcare.



Travel

Visa-free travel within the Schengen Area.

Open a business

The option to work as freelance or establish a business in Portugal.

Bring your family

An applicant may include dependant children and parents through "family reunification".

N.H.R.

The option to apply for Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax regime status.

Permanent residency / Citizenship

Qualification for permanent residency or citizenship in Portugal after five years.


What's the requirements?






Incomes:


  • Proof of average monthly income earned in the exercise of subordinate or independent professional activity in the last three months of a minimum value equivalent to four guaranteed minimum monthly remunerations (€3040):

 

We need to highlight that, even if you have the minimum, the request can be denied. 

So we recommend showing more than the minimum.

Documents/Requirements:


  • If you’re working under contract: 

(i) present the employment contract; 

(ii) a statement from the employer proving the link with the company; 

  • If you are a freelancer, you must present: 

(i) company incorporation agreement; 

(ii) service provision agreement; 

(iii) document proving the provision of services to one or more entities; 

  • Document proving tax residency outside Portugal (Last tax return); 
  • Travel insurance; 
  • Visa application form; 
  • Request for consultation of the Portuguese criminal record by SEF; 
  • Criminal record certificate from the country of origin or from the country where the applicant has resided for more than one year (with Apostille);
  • Proof of accommodation;
